Founded by percussionist Alan MacDonald, the band began as a Gypsy Kings style acoustic jazz band that later switched to Manouche style (French Gypsy Jazz) closely resembling the energetic and stylish style of Django Reinhardt (jazz guitar) and Stephan Grapelli (jazz violin). Currently, they blend the two, utilizing Django’s Latin inspired repertoire.
Manouche is currently undergoing a worldwide revival, as evidence in the sound track to just about any TV programme on lifestyle, property or food.
The fusion of America Swing with French Gypsy trad music made famous by Belgian Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and the world’s first jazz violinistStephan Grapelli in from the 20’s to 40’s. This sound more than any other, evokes the Parisian jazz and arts scene even till this day. Currently, Manouche is undergoing a massive world-wide revival among young jazz musicians; it features in the background track to almost all food, wine, lifestyle, property TV programmes. It’s matching dance style Balboa is being taught around the world and in Auckland by Dance Out Central, whose students attend our public performances. Included in the Manouche category is the world famous Gypsy Kings (also French Gypsies) 80’s 90’s sound.
We also perform classic Latin pieces from the equivalent time periods originating in Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina, Cuba, Mexico etc., as performed by Buena Vista Social Club, Carlos Jobim, Carlos Santana and as well as sources lost in time.
